If you’ve ever looked into getting  a ceramic coating for your vehicle, you’ve likely noticed their price tag can be significantly higher than other paint protection options like wax or sealants. So, what makes ceramic coatings so expensive? The primary reason lies in the time-intensive preparation process and the controlled environment required for application and curing. Let’s break it down step by step.

The Extensive Preparation Process

A flawless ceramic coating requires meticulous prep work to ensure the coating adheres correctly and delivers its promised durability and protection. Here’s a look at our standard procedure for ceramic coating application:

  1. Iron Decontamination
    • Before even washing the car, we apply an iron decontaminant to dissolve embedded iron particles from the vehicle’s surface. This step helps remove industrial fallout and brake dust, ensuring a smooth surface.
  2. Pre-Wash
    • A pre-wash using an alkaline-based solution helps to remove stubborn organic materials such as bug splatter and bird droppings, minimizing the risk of scratching the paint during the full wash.
  3. Foam Wash
    • Using a pH-neutral foam wash, we clean the entire exterior of the vehicle to remove remaining dirt, grease, and road contaminants. This is where we perform the contact wash to ensure every surface is thoroughly cleaned.
  4. Clay Bar Treatment
    • This step removes stubborn surface contaminants that washing alone can’t address, such as tree sap or overspray. It leaves the paint silky smooth and ready for correction.
  5. Paint Correction
    • Paint correction is one of the most time-consuming steps, often taking several hours (or even days) depending on the condition of the paint. This process involves techniques such as polishing, compounding, and even wet sanding to remove swirl marks, scratches, and other imperfections, creating a flawless surface for the coating to bond. The majority of the cost of ceramic coatings comes from this stage, as it is by far the longest and most important part of the process. Paint correction also requires a high degree of skill to achieve professional-level results.
  6. Foam Wash and IPA Wipe Down
    • After paint correction, we do another foam wash and wipe down the surface with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to remove any oils or residues left behind. This step ensures the ceramic coating adheres perfectly by leaving the paintwork as clean as possible.

At every step of the way, we use brand-new microfiber towels to reduce the possibility of scratching during washes and paint correction. These towels are thoroughly cleaned before use to remove any oils, ensuring they are perfectly clean when wiping off the ceramic coating. The same care goes into preparing the ceramic applicator, as a clean applicator is essential for achieving a flawless finish.

The Ceramic Application Process

Once the vehicle is prepped, the ceramic coating is carefully applied in small sections. This requires precision to avoid streaks or high spots, which can affect the final look and performance of the coating.

  • Controlled Environment: For best results, the vehicle must be in a temperature- and humidity-controlled environment. These conditions allow the coating to cure properly, ensuring maximum durability and gloss.
  • Multiple Layers: Some ceramic coatings require multiple layers to achieve optimal protection, adding to the time and effort involved.

Curing Time

After application, the ceramic coating needs time to cure. During this period, the vehicle must stay in a controlled environment to prevent contamination from dust, moisture, or other particles. We recommend a 24-hour cure time for optimal results, but if a customer needs their vehicle sooner, a 4-6 hour cure time can suffice in most cases.

Why It’s Worth It

The extensive process and controlled conditions are what make ceramic coatings so expensive—but also so effective. Here’s why many car owners believe the investment is worth it:

  • Long-Term Protection: Unlike wax or sealants that wear off in months, ceramic coatings chemically bond to the paint surface, creating a durable layer that can last years when properly maintained. In contrast, waxes and sealants are physical layers that sit on top of the paint and wear off much more quickly.
  • Enhanced Appearance: The deep gloss and hydrophobic properties make your vehicle look stunning and easier to clean.
  • Resale Value: A well-maintained ceramic coating can preserve your vehicle’s paint, boosting its resale value.

Final Thoughts

The cost of ceramic coatings reflects the time, effort, and expertise required to deliver a high-quality result. From extensive prep work to controlled curing, every step is essential to ensure the coating performs as promised. While the initial price may seem steep, the long-term benefits and protection make ceramic coatings a worthwhile investment for many car owners.
